Testing and Tutoring
Tutoring is receiving additional academic support from a peer, instructor, or professional tutor who has demonstrated knowledge and expertise in the field. In addition to reviewing course content, tutors also provide encouragement, help you develop relevant academic skills, and assist with problem solving and learning strategies to help you learn how to find the answers and master the material on your own.
Tutoring has many benefits which include one-on-one attention, improved academic performance, and improved self-confidence. Tutoring also helps you overcome learning obstacles and develop positive learning habits such as asking questions, reworking problems and learning from mistakes, and more.
Tutoring services at MTC are offered to students free of charge.
Tutoring Expectations
In order to receive tutoring services and again the most benefit, we expect students do to the following:
- Attend class regularly: Tutoring is meant to enhance and supplement the information that you learn in class, not to replace it.
- Review course material: It is not your tutor’s responsibility to teach you the material, but rather to help you understand the material that you have already reviewed.
- Bring course materials to your appointment: Course materials include notes, handouts, textbooks, the syllabus, and assignments.
- Be courteous: Arrive on time. If you are unable to attend, please notify your tutor with at least 12 hours’ notice when possible. Students who miss two tutoring sessions without notifying their tutor will not be permitted to schedule additional appointments for that subject for the remainder of the term.
Important! Tutors will not do your homework. Tutors can model sample problems, review problems with you, review writing, provide feedback to improve, and help prepare for exams. Tutors expect you have worked on your homework problems before your session and have prepared specific questions about any challenges.
Tutoring Formats
