Why Online?

Online learning offers several advantages. There is minimal life interruption, meaning you can work around schedules, kids, jobs, etc., and do things on YOUR time. There is almost no travel time or expense. Online learning is convenient, flexible, and accessible. Our instructors teach on campus and online so you know you are getting the same quality of instruction whether you are online or on campus.

Diversity is another advantage. Our students are diverse in age, gender, and often ethnicity. This adds varying perspectives and enhances the learning environment. Online learners are also more involved in the classroom ” as they are not afraid to speak up ” in the online environment.

What is online learning?

Online learning is the process of gaining knowledge and skills outside of a physical classroom-in or a virtual environment. Online classes at MTC are led by a qualified MTC faculty member, and class sizes are limited. Classes are conducted using technology such as computer-based learning, teleconference, virtual classrooms, and more! This method of learning is used by educational institutions across the globe to enable people of all ages and backgrounds to have easy access to knowledge and teachers.

Advantages of Online Learning Convenience
You complete coursework around your schedule. There are deadlines, but generally no requirement to be in class on a specific day or time.
Richer class discussion
Studies show that people get more out of online learning because they find that there is richer class discussion. In a classroom or lecture hall, the quieter students tend not to contribute to class discussion. When you are online, you have time to compose a response to a class discussion and everyone in the class has an opportunity to participate.
Different learning styles
Online classrooms include several elements to accompany the content such as videos, diagrams, presentation materials, additional printed materials, and discussion sections to expand on concepts and theories.
Friendly atmosphere
Some students find it easy to interact with people online. Online students often develop professional relationships with other online students…and it is not unusual for classes to form reunions, ” social events, or meet up with individuals in person.

Is Online Learning Right for Me?

Learning online works for many people, but it is not for everyone.

Online learning will probably work for you if you:

have a fast, stable Internet connection
are proficient at using e-mail and word processing programs
are able to work independently
can adhere to deadlines
are willing to ask questions

Online learning might not be your best choice if you:

do not have a fast, stable Internet connection, or if you have to travel somewhere to use a compute
struggle with technology, e-mail, and word processing software
depend on face-to-face interaction to motivate you to learn
are not self-motivated
do not have good time management skills

Student Expectations

Online students must be self-motivated, independent learners willing to commit to a challenging program.
Make a personal commitment.
Be actively engaged in the online learning environment.
Use an Internet-based course management system and email.
Complete and submit assignments according to the course schedule.
You should complete the Online Learner Self-Assessment to make sure that distance learning is right for you.

State Authorization for Distance Education

Marion Technical College is currently authorized to offer distance education programs in all states except California.

Online Student Complaint Process for Out of State Students

Students taking online classes at Marion Technical College who are from out-of-state should attempt to resolve any issues or complaints with the college first. To file a complaint, complete the Student Complaint Form. For more information on how to file a complaint, see the Student Handbook.

However, if an issue cannot be resolved internally, you may file a complaint about Marion Technical College with your State by referring to the following list of State Agencies in compliance with federal Department of Education regulations. You may also contact our institutional accrediting agency, The Higher Learning Commission.

MTC DISTANCE LEARNERS

If you are involved in one of our online degrees, you also have the option of testing at one of Accuplacer’s remote testing sites. There may be a fee for this service. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact the Testing Center at 740-386-4154 or testing@mtc.edu.
