Advising

Transfer Information

Marion Technical College students have many opportunities to continue their education toward a bachelor’s degree directly after they graduate or after starting their careers. Recent statistics show that between 20 and 25 percent of MTC graduates transfer to a four-year institution within six months of graduation.  Earning a bachelor’s degree has a strong return on investment including higher salary and earnings over time, higher job satisfaction, and overall improved health and sense of well-being.

MTC encourages students who intend to transfer to plan their academic courses carefully in consultation with MTC advisors as well as with advisors at the college or university to which they want to transfer.

Will my credits transfer?

For the most part, yes, credits from classes taken at MTC will transfer as long as they are 1000-level or higher. There are a variety of factors involved such as your current and future major, institution, type of course, and course grades. It is important to start planning for your bachelor’s degree early and work closely with an advisor to ensure the classes you are taking align with your long-term goals and the transfer institution policies.

Ohio Department of Higher Education (ODHE) policy states that all courses 1000-level or higher with a grade of “D” or higher shall be accepted as transfer credit at any public college or university in Ohio.  However, how these credits are applied toward your degree are subject to other state transfer programs and the transfer institution policies.

Private institutions and out-of-state institutions are not subject to ODHE policies and make their own determinations about transfer credit.  You can use Transferology to see how your credits will transfer (if they have been added to the database) or consult your advisor for more information about our private college and university transfer partners.

Transferology

Transferology is an effective and user-friendly tool that helps students transfer and apply credits to degree requirements. You can easily search for the courses you have already taken to see how they will transfer to your next institution.  If you need to take a class for your MTC degree at another institution, you can also search for equivalent courses at other institutions that you can take to transfer back to MTC.

Please note: If a class is not listed in Transferology, it does not necessarily mean that it won’t transfer.  Instead, this course may just need to be evaluated.  Contact your advisor or an admissions representative at your transfer institution for more information.

How do I transfer?

Once you have determined which college or university want to attend, here are your next steps:

  • Apply to the college or university.
  • Meet with an admissions representative at your intended college or university. They can help provide you with an unofficial evaluation of your transcript, map out a preliminary academic plan, and walk you through the enrollment process. Be sure to have a list of the classes you have taken at MTC as well as the course catalog.
  • Request an MTC transcript from the Office of the Registrar to be sent to the institution.  Colleges and universities will only accept official transcripts sent directly from the institution. It’s always a good idea for you to keep an unofficial copy for your reference too.
  • If you completed coursework at other institutions prior to coming to MTC, you will also need to contact those institutions to request a transcript to be sent to the transfer college or university.  Even if the courses are reflected on your MTC transcript, institutions will require an official transcript from the original institution.
  • File your FAFSA and add the school code of your new college. If necessary, speak with a financial aid counselor.
  • Apply for scholarships.  Many institutions have special scholarships just for transfer students.  You may also be eligible for other academic and need-based scholarships.

State Transfer Guarantees

Students are guaranteed the transfer of applicable credits among Ohio’s public colleges and universities and equitable treatment in the application of credits to admissions and degree requirements.

The Ohio Department of Higher Education (ODHE) has worked with colleges and universities to establish policies that ensure students can begin their college career at any state college or university, including Marion Technical College, and transfer credits earned to other state institutions without unnecessary barriers. This allows students, parents, and advisors to develop viable educational plans using all the resources of the public higher education system – beginning at any point along the pathway from high school through college.

Three (3) key stipulations of Ohio transfer policy mandates that public colleges and universities:

  1. Assure transfer of course credits and degrees without unnecessary duplication.
  2. Use a universal course equivalency classification system to eliminate inconsistent judgment in the transfer credit application.
  3. Admit students with associate degrees to state public universities on an equally competitive basis with native students for specific programs and with priority over out-of-state associate degree graduates and out-of-state transfer students.

To see how your MTC courses will transfer to other Ohio public colleges and universities, use the Credit Transfer Tool

It is possible for students to complete 50 percent of a bachelor’s degree at MTC depending upon their chosen major. According to state policy, students can maximize the transfer of college credit throughout all Ohio public institutions using the following options:

Ohio Transfer 36

The Ohio Department of Higher Education (ODHE) has developed core general education requirements known as the Ohio Transfer 36 (OT36). The Ohio Transfer 36 represents a body of knowledge and academic skills common across Ohio colleges and universities in: 1) English composition and communication; 2) mathematics; 3) arts and humanities; 4) social and behavioral sciences; and, 5) natural and physical sciences.

Any college’s Ohio Transfer 36 courses are guaranteed to transfer among Ohio public institutions of higher education as a block of courses or on an individual course-by-course basis for students who do not intend to complete the entire block. For more information, visit the OT36 websiteClick here to see a listing of approved OT 36 courses.

Transfer Assurance Guides (TAGs)

TAGs are groups of foundational and common major courses that represent commonly accepted pathways to bachelor’s degrees, including specific majors. TAG courses are guaranteed to transfer and apply to the degree/program requirements of each major. Some of these courses may also fulfill OT36 requirements.

For more information, visit the TAG website. Click here to see a listing of approved TAG courses.

Career-Technical Assurance Guides (CTAGs)

CTAGs are courses students take at career-technical schools; these courses can count for college credit provided the student meets the requirements listed in the CTAG. MTC participates in CTAGs for Business, Criminal Justice, Engineering, Information Technology, Behavioral Health, Exercise Science, Health Information Management, Medical Assisting, and Practical Nursing. For more information, visit the CTAG websiteClick here to see a listing of approved CTAG courses.

Industry-Recognized Credential Transfer Assurance Guide (ITAGs)

Some industry-recognized, external credentials (license/certification) you have obtained may be eligible to earn college credit. To be eligible for college credit, your credential must be is current.  This opportunity is possible thanks to Industry-Recognized Credential Transfer Assurance Guides (ITAGs).

For a complete list of ITAGs and the requirements to earn ITAG credit, visit the Ohio Department of Higher Education’s (ODHE) ITAG website.

Ohio Guaranteed Transfer Pathways

The Ohio Guaranteed Transfer Pathways (OGTP) provide a clear path to associate degree completion and then to bachelor’s degree completion in a related major. By following an OGTP, you can ensure that you are taking coursework that will not only transfer but apply to your desired degree. The successful completion of an OGTP will be recorded on your transcript, and upon transfer to a public bachelor’s degree program, all coursework taken as part of the pathway will transfer toward the completion of a bachelor’s degree in a related major.

Marion Tech currently offers OGTPs in Business, Economics, English, History, Psychology, Social Work, and Sociology.  For more information and a list of courses in these pathways, visit the Ohio Guided Transfer Pathways Tool.

Note: Completion of an OGTP does not guarantee admission to a certain program of study. Admissions may be competitive. Please consult with your academic advisor.
